All About Us
We started the Sun Valley Arts project to empower and educate people in Kibera through art. Our artwork is inspired by our immediate environment. We channel our inspiration through drawings, paintings, wood carvings and even metalwork using recycled materials.
Sun Valley Arts was set up by 15 young aspiring artists in Kibera. Most of us were still in school when we first opened, working mostly after school and during the school breaks. The Covid lockdown gave us plenty of time to focus on our skills making new works. The name ‘Sun Valley Arts’ was taken from a neighboring estate in Langata, symbolizing a starting point out of Kibera. The Sun representing something shining and positve. The ‘Valley’ which travels down to the ground, where we pick our materials from then travel upward symbolizing our growth and development of our reclaimed materials into art.
The collective is made up of mostly boys in the beginning, but today we have a number of males and females in the collective all residing within Kibera. Our works can range from cartoon style drawings to large scale graffiti. But much of our work focuses around repurposed aluminum cans and even some scrap wood carvings.
When we can find time we include younger children in classes to teach what we have learned and inspire them for a brighter future. Our recent move of our studio within the newly launched Kibera Arts District gives us more exposure and support. We have even launched our Art Tours through the ‘Experiences' offered on AirBnB.
Hope we have the chance to share with you all that we do..
